Preventative Maintenance Tips for Diesel Engines

Diesel engines are typically used in trucks, SUVs, and semi-trucks, although some cars use them as well. They work by igniting the fuel source by raising the air temperature through mechanical compression. Just like any engine, they are used to power equipment, in this case, vehicles. We rely on our vehicles for numerous things every single day. If the engine is damaged in any way, your vehicle will be unable to work for you. Simple preventative maintenance is the best way to keep your engine and your vehicle working for you. Here are some tips for maintaining your engine:

  • Monitor Coolant: Engines get very hot, which is why coolant is used in engines to keep components protected from damaging heat. However, coolant can become more acidic over time and be damaging to engine parts. Monitor your coolant levels and regularly flush it to protect your engine.
  • Oil Changes: Oil works as both a lubricant and a coolant. It keeps the metal components of your engine lubricated, reducing the friction that produces heat and can be damaging. Engine oil should be changed every 5,000 miles or so for diesel engines for best results. It may need to be more frequent than that, depending on how you’re using the engine.
  • Fuel Filter Replacements: Fuel filters help keep contaminants out of your engine and fuel lines. They need to be replaced every 10-15 thousand miles. There are typically two of them, both should be replaced at the same time for optimal results.
  • Keep it Clean: Dirty engines are never good. Allowing dirt and grime to freely be around your engine can be devastating. They can damage your engine and cause a nightmare for repairs. Keep the engine as clean as possible.
